At least 14 people have been killed and 750 others wounded in a massive explosion at the port of Bandar Abbas in southwestern Iran, a media report said on Sunday.
The explosion occurred at the Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas on Saturday, IRNA reported.
It said initial investigations suggested the explosion was caused by several stored containers at the port.
The report added as of 8:30am today (Sunday), the blast had resulted in 14 deaths, 750 injuries, with six people missing.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered an investigation into the causes of the incident.
He wrote on X the interior minister had been sent to the region to “examine the dimensions of the accident.”
“After receiving initial reports and analysing the possible causes of the incident,” Pezeshkian emphasised the need to conduct “a comprehensive assessment of the causes.
Shahid Rajaee is a large facility for container shipments, covering 2,400 hectares (around 5,900 acres). It handles 70 million tonnes of cargo annually, including oil and general shipping.
It has nearly 500,000 square metres (5.4 million square feet) of warehouses and 35 shipping berths.
