CARE-Afghanistan says 2.5 million girls are currently out of school and have no access to education.
But the Ministry of Education (MoE) says education has been suspended for about 1.3 million girls over grade six.
In its latest report Despite enormous challenges, some girls in Afghanistan are still finding ways to learn, the organisation having access to education has always been an enormous issue for children in Afghanistan.
The report said 80 percent of school-aged Afghan girls and young women – 2.5 million people — were out of school in Afghanistan, the only country in the world where female education has been banned.
CARE said the caretaker administration suspended in September 2021 all forms of formal education for Afghan girls over the age of 12, leaving 1.1 million out of school. The number has now increased to 2.5 million.
Without providing details, the report said deprivation of girls of education had inflicted a loss of $5.4 billion on the economy of the country.
It added since last year, a total of 1,451 extremely marginalised out-of-school girls, including 64 with disabilities, were taught by 57 teachers as part of the Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP).
Aziz Ahmad Rayan, Ministry of Education (MoE) adviser, told a press conference the education of about 1.3 million girls above the sixth grade had been suspended across the country.
The Taliban suspended education for girls above grade six on December 18, 2022 till further orders. The decision has drawn widespread reactions.
