Torrential rains and floods have left at least 33 people dead and 18 others missing in Beijing, a media report said on Wednesday.
The Chinese capital was hit by flash flooding induced by the heaviest rains in six decades from July 29 to August 2, the Global Times reported.
One government official told a press conference the flood had affected nearly 1.29 million people, destroyed 59,000 houses and damaged 147,000 others.
The flooding also harmed 15,000 hectares of agricultural land, the official said. “An assessment of property damage remains ongoing.”
Beijing recorded rainfall of 744.8 millimeters — the heaviest deluge to lash the city in 140 years — between the evening of July 29 and the morning of August 2.
A day earlier, Chinese Premier Li Qiang ordered a comprehensive search for the missing and efforts at minimising casualties.
“Basic livelihoods of the affected people must be guaranteed, including enough food and clothing, temporary shelters, clean water and timely medical treatment.”
