US and Russian officials are set to meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to initiate talks aimed at ending Moscow’s nearly three-year war in Ukraine, Reuters reported on Sunday.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Saudi Arabia for the discussions, US Representative Michael McCaul told Reuters.
The details of who will represent Russia in the talks remain unclear.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, McCaul explained that the goal of the talks is to facilitate a meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “to finally bring peace and end the conflict.”
The US State Department has not yet commented on the development.
Earlier, Rubio held a conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, during which both sides agreed on maintaining regular contacts in preparation for a potential meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump, according to Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
