A new government has been formed in Lebanon following extensive negotiations among political parties, with Nawaf Salam appointed as prime minister.
Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated the 24-member cabinet would prioritise financial reforms and reconstruction.
The new administration would also work for the implementation of a UN resolution, which served as a cornerstone for stability along Lebanon’s border with Israel, CNN reported.
The announcement came after more than three weeks of discussions among Lebanon’s key political parties.
On Friday, US Deputy Envoy for Middle East Morgan Ortagus said the his country considered Hezbollah’s involvement in the new cabinet a red line” and thanked Israel for dealing devastating blows to the group, in a controversial statement that sparked protests in Lebanon.
Lebanon had been governed by an interim government since 2022. On Saturday, President Joseph Aoun accepted the resignation of the caretaker government and appointed Prime Minister Nawaf Salam‘s new cabinet of 24 ministers.
