The United States will officially withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, according to the United Nations.
The UN announced the development on Thursday after being formally notified by President Donald Trump, who has accused the agency of mismanagement, Reuters reported
Trump made the announcement on Monday, just hours after being sworn in for a second four-year term. The WHO expressed regret over the decision, noting that the US is its top donor country.
Under a 1948 US congressional resolution, Trump is required to give one year’s notice of withdrawal and fulfill Washington’s financial obligations.
“I can confirm we have now received the U.S. letter on the WHO withdrawal. It is dated January 22, 2025, and will take effect a year from that date, on January 22, 2026,” said Farhan Haq, deputy UN spokesperson.
Experts inside and outside the WHO have warned that the US departure could jeopardize critical programs, particularly those addressing tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other health emergencies.
The withdrawal order signed by Trump also stated that the US administration would halt negotiations on the WHO’s pandemic treaty during the withdrawal process.
