Russia and Iran have signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, envisaging cooperation in different areas, including trade and military ties.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, currently on a visit to Moscow, inked the treaty following talks at the Kremlin on Friday, TASS reported.
Expected to boost Moscow-Tehran relations to a new level as strategic partners, the agreement establishes a legal framework for the further deepening bilateral cooperation in the long term.
The agreement covers different spheres, including defense, counter-terrorism, energy, finance, transport, industry, agriculture, culture, science and engineering.
At his meeting with Pezeshkian, Putin said the deal would give an impetus to practical cooperation between the two nations — both under Western sanctions — in all areas.
He went on to comment: “Your visit today is of special significance, because we will not only have an opportunity to discuss all areas of cooperation, but we will also sign a major treaty.”
Hailing the agreement as a real breakthrough, the Russian leader hoped it would create conditions for the stable and sustainable development of the two nations and the region at large.”
Moscow and Tehran were endeavouring to clear technical obstacles to projects aimed to ship Russian gas to Iran via Azerbaijan, Putin said.
The visiting dignitary called the projects feasible, commending the treaty as a new chapter of strategic relations, paving the ground for greater trade and security cooperation.
