Scores of people have been killed and wounded in a deadly attack in the US city of New Orleans, CNN reported on Thursday.
At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured on Wednesday morning when a driver crashed a pick-up truck into a crowd during New Year’s celebrations.
With the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probing the incident as an act of terrorism, the suspect as identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an army veteran from Texas.
In a series of video recordings before the attack on Bourbon Street, the suspect said he had joined ISIS. Jabbar also served in the US Army from 2007 to 2020. He deployed to Afghanistan once from February 2009 to January 2010.
President Joe Biden, meanwhile, cautioned no one should jump to conclusions. He directed law enforcement officials to continue to intensively investigate the attack.
FBI said the suspect, who was killed in a firefight with officers, had an ISIS flag in the vehicle — rented through a firm called Turo — at the time of the attack.
After ramming his vehicle into the crowd, the attacker fired upon local law-enforcement personnel, who killed him in return fire, the agency added.
