IFJ released on Tuesday the annual list of journalists and media workers killed in 2024.
The federation deplored 2024 as the deadliest year for journalists, saying 58 percent of the killings occurred in the Middle East, including Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
According to IFJ figures, 22 journalists were killed in Asian countries during the year, including seven in Pakistan and three in India.
IFJ said nine journalists were killed in the Americas and four in European countries in 2024.
The war in Ukraine again claimed victims, with four journalists killed in 2024, compared with 13 in 2022 and four in 2023.
Despite the conflict, Europe remained the safest continent in the world for journalists, the IFJ added.
On December 31, IFJ counted 516 journalists in prison, representing a sharp increase compared with 2023 (427) and 2022 (375). With 135 journalists behind bars, China remains the largest prison for journalists globally.
