At least 50 people, including women and children, have been killed and 70 others wounded in two separate traffic accidents in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Thursday.
Information and Culture Director Mullah Hamidullah Nisar told Pajhwok Afghan News the first accident took place after a 580-type bus collided with a fuel tanker on the Kabul-Kandahar highway in Shahbaz Khan Bazar area of Ghazni city, the provincial capital, on Wednesday night.
In the second mishap, a passenger bus crashed into a truck in Andar district on the same highway overnight, he said.
He added 50 people, including women and children, lost their lives and 70 others were wounded in these two collisions.
He feared the fatalities could further rise as some of the injured were said to be in critical condition.
He blamed the accidents on reckless driving.
On the other hand, Khadim Hussain, one of the injured in Ghazni civil hospital, said: “I am originally from Daikundi province. I was on the way to Kandahar from capital Kabul. It was around 11:00pm when our bus crashed into another truck. I was sleeping that time when I woke up, I saw dead and wounded people.”
Habibullah, a resident of Ghazni and an eyewitness to the traffic accident in Shahbaz area, linked the mishap with narrowness of the road and over speeding.
He says that he does not know the exact figures, but the number of dead and injured was high.
Seven traffic accidents occurred during this week in the province, which caused casualties too many people.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) also expressed its deep sorrow over the last night’s tragic traffic accidents in the province.
The caretaker government has also instructed relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
