Prominent poet, writer and researcher Wasif Bakhtri has passed away in the United States at the age of 81.
Wasif Bakhtri’s daughter Manezha Bakhtri wrote on Facebook that her father passed away due to an illness.
“Ustad Wasif Bakhtri, our father, our guide, our soul and self joined eternity last night… His life is so great and his memory is so bright that his death will forever be indebted to him.”
From poetry collections to literary researches, writings and translations, Wasif Bakhtri has written more than 20 works in Dari language and some of which have been translated into other languages.
Brief biography
Bakhtri was born in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, in 1321.
He graduated from school in 1345 and received a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Languages and Literature of Kabul University and started working in the Department of Compilation and Translation of the Ministry of Education.
Bakhtri went to America for higher education in 1353 and received a master’s degree from Columbia University. He returned to Afghanistan in 1357 and continued to work in the Ministry of Education.
He also worked as a manager and editor in a number of Afghan media and was a member of a number of institutions and cultural centers.
After the Saur Revolution, Bakhtri was imprisoned for about one year.
Wasif Bakhtri lived in Pakistan from 1375 to 1380, but has been living in California since 1380.
