Brazil have clinched the FIFA Futsal World Cup title for a record sixth time by edging past Argentina in a closely-contested final.
In Sunday’s final played in Tashkent, Brazil stormed into commanding lead with two goals in the first half, while Argentina added a goal in 38 minutes of the game.
In a dramatic finish, FIFA said in a statement, Brazil made history by winning a historic sixth title, adding to the accolades they claimed in 1989, 1992, 1996, 2008 and 2012.
Ferrão and Rafael gave Brazil a 2-0 half-time lead before Argentina — the 2016 champions — pulled one back through Matías Rosa.
Maintaining their aplomb, Brazil retained their lead handed the opposition their second loss in their last 21 FIFA Futsal World Cup matches.
In the third-place playoff, Ukraine bagged the bronze medal with a 7-1 victory against France.
New Zealand, Tajikistan and Afghanistan joined France in competing in the 10th edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the first time.
The tournament, featuring 24 teams, got under way on September 14 in Uzbekistan’s capital.
Afghanistan, placed in Group C along with Argentina Ukraine and Angola, also participated in the event.
The national squad had trounced Angola by 6-2 in their maiden appearance in the mega contest. However, they lost to Ukraine and Argentina in their second and third group-stage matches.
