The Canal Department in eastern Nangarhar province says recent rains and natural disasters destroyed 98 percent of date yield this year.
The Canal Department had earlier estimated this year’s date harvest to reach 26 tons —four tons more than last year.
However, Nangarhar Canal Department spokesman Sayed Humayun Gharibmal said that recent rains and severe storms destroyed 98 percent of the date harvest.
He added Nangarhar Canal director Mullah Mohammad Naeem Agha Mohammadi, visited the date farm in Hada Farm area yesterday and he was told by officials that the harvest had been destroyed.
He said the 20-acre date orchard located in Hada Farm area was estimated to produce dates more than last year.
But rains and bad weather destroyed 98 percent of the harvest of this orchard.
