The Afghanistan Analysts Network (AAN) says that Afghans without permanent residency in the United Kingdom are facing prolonged insecurity and serious challenges due to the tightening of the country’s immigration policies.
In a report released yesterday, AAN stated that many of these Afghans, despite having received immigration documents in recent years, may have to wait longer to obtain permanent residency under new policies proposed in November 2025.
The report notes that these policies are aimed at preventing further migration into the UK.
According to the report, thousands of Afghans whose asylum applications have been rejected are living in a state of uncertainty, with neither the right to work nor the possibility of being deported by the UK government.
The report further states that in November 2025, the UK government proposed major reforms to its immigration system, which would make the pathway to citizenship longer, more expensive, and more complex.
AAN noted that the report is based on 13 interviews conducted between September 2025 and February 2026, including eight interviews with Afghans who arrived in the UK after 2021, and five with immigration lawyers and individuals working with newly arrived Afghans. The report also includes a review of policies and available data.
This comes as the UK government, in March this year, also suspended the issuance of student visas for citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan.
