President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that officials from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States will hold trilateral meetings for the first time on Friday and Saturday, as the US continues its push to end Russia’s war on Ukraine, Al Jazeera reports.
Following his discussions with US President Donald Trump in Davos on Thursday, Zelenskyy said that the framework for security guarantees for Ukraine has been finalized, and an agreement on post-war economic recovery is nearly complete.
This forms a key component of Kyiv-backed proposals aimed at countering an earlier US plan that was seen as favoring Moscow.
Zelenskyy referred to the upcoming negotiations in Abu Dhabi as the “first trilateral meeting” between the three nations. “I think this is good,” he said.
Russia has not immediately commented on the proposed talks.
The US president described his meeting with Zelenskyy as “good” but noted that efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine remain an “ongoing process.”
Earlier, US envoy Steve Witkoff said that significant progress has been made in the long-running negotiations and that discussions are now focused on a single outstanding issue.
“I think we’ve got it down to one issue, and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable,” Witkoff told an audience at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Thursday. “If both sides want to solve this, we’re going to get it solved.”
Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, later traveled to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The US officials are then scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi, where the discussions will continue in “military-to-military” working groups, Witkoff said.
According to Zelenskyy, the UAE meetings on Friday and Saturday will include the first-ever trilateral sessions between US, Russian, and Ukrainian officials.
