Russia and the United States failed to reach a compromise on a potential peace deal to end the war in Ukraine after a five-hour Kremlin meeting between President Vladimir Putin and two senior envoys of US President Donald Trump, according to media reports on Wednesday.
The talks in Moscow — involving Putin, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner — stretched past midnight on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
After the meeting, Putin’s senior foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters: “No compromises have been found yet. There is still a lot of work to be done.”
Ushakov said Putin reacted negatively to several US proposals. He added that Witkoff later went to the US Embassy in Moscow to brief the White House on the discussions.
He also noted that no meeting between Putin and Trump is currently planned, though he described the talks as constructive and pointed to “significant opportunities” for economic cooperation between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking in Dublin, said the outcome of the conflict would depend heavily on the talks in Moscow. However, he expressed concern that the United States might lose interest in the peace process.
