The Trump administration suspended all immigration applications from Afghan nationals with immediate effect on Wednesday night following a shooting in Washington, D.C., that critically injured two National Guard members from West Virginia.
US President Donald Trump said the suspect in the attack entered the country from Afghanistan in 2021, according to reports.
The two West Virginia National Guard troops were shot near the White House and are in critical condition, officials confirmed.
Reports identify the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakhanwal, 29, an Afghan national residing in Washington, D.C.
“Effective immediately, processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals is stopped indefinitely pending further review of security and vetting protocols,” the USCIS said on X.
