At least 14 people have died after a gold mine collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Venezuela, media reports said on Tuesday.
According to Reuters, the incident occurred in the town of El Callao, in southern Venezuela.
Teams from the National Risk Management System are continuing operations to recover the bodies. So far, remains have been retrieved from three separate tunnels.
“The first phase of the work is to pump out all the shafts in the area to lower the water level, and then assess rescue efforts,” emergency officials said in a social media post.
Authorities confirmed that at least 14 people lost their lives in the incident.
