At least 25 people have been killed and dozens injured after a temporary structure under construction collapsed in Ethiopia, international media reported on Thursday.
According to the Associated Press, the incident occurred in the morning at Menjar Shenkora Arerti Mariam Church in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, where worshippers had gathered for an annual celebration in honor of St. Mary.
“We were all in prayer when suddenly the scaffolding gave way, and people began falling from the ceiling,” said witness Mikias Mebratu, who lost three friends in the tragedy.
Seyoum Altaye, a clinician at a local hospital, confirmed that children and elderly people were among the victims.
“So far, we have recorded 25 fatalities and more than 100 injured,” he said, adding that the hospital has requested assistance from the Red Cross to treat the wounded.
