The United States on Thursday vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
The draft received 14 votes in favour, with the US casting the sole veto—marking the sixth time Washington has blocked a Gaza-related resolution since the nearly two-year war between Israel and Palestinian group Hamas began, Reuters reported.
“Famine has been confirmed in Gaza — not projected, not declared, confirmed,” said Denmark’s UN Ambassador, Christina Markus Lassen, addressing the council before the vote.
“Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its military operations in Gaza City, further deepening the suffering of civilians. This catastrophic situation — this humanitarian and human failure — is what compelled us to act today,” she added.
According to global hunger monitors, Gaza City and surrounding areas are officially experiencing famine, with expectations that it will continue to spread unless conditions improve.
