Following Monday’s meetings, US President Donald Trump said he called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and has begun arrangements for a meeting “at a location to be determined” between the Russian president and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself,” he said in a post on social media. “Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.”
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are coordinating with Russia and Ukraine, Trump said.
Putin’s top aide said following the call that Putin and Trump “expressed their support for the continuation of direct negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations.”
“In this regard, in particular, the idea was discussed that the level of representatives from the Ukrainian and Russian sides should be increased,” the aide, Yuri Ushakov,
US President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House for a high-stakes meeting as the US president pushed for a deal to end Moscow’s war on its neighbor.
A host of European leaders joined the pair.
The day of meetings followed Trump’s Friday summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska — and it came about six months after an explosive Oval Office meeting between Zelenskyy, Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
Zelenskyy told reporters: “The president of the United States supported a trilateral meeting at the level of leaders: Ukraine, US and Russia. And the United States suggest it is conducted as soon as possible. But for that, agreement on all sides is needed”.
Putin-Zelenskyy meeting to take place within 2 weeks: Germany
A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is possible within the next two weeks, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was among the European leaders who attended Monday’s talks at the White House.
The location has not yet been agreed upon, according to Merz. “We do not know whether the Russian president will have the courage to attend such a summit. That is why persuasion is needed,” he said at a press briefing.
Merz said his expectations for the White House talks on Monday were exceeded.
“I won’t hide the fact that I wasn’t sure that today would turn out this way. It could have gone differently. But my expectations have not only been met, they have been exceeded as far as today’s meeting is concerned,” he said.
