Tajikistan has started deporting undocumented migrants, including Afghans, citing “concerns about smuggling and forged documents”.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has deployed teams at Sher Khan port to monitor the process.
According to a statement from Tajikistan’s National Security Committee, Tajik authorities during their investigations identified cases involving drug trafficking, the spread of extremism, the use of fake documents to apply for asylum and attempts to transit through Tajikistan to reach other countries.
Based on this statement, Tajikistan has already deported a number of Afghan migrants for these reasons and will continue to expel asylum seekers who have violated the country’s laws.
In its latest report, IOM expressed concern about the potential forced deportation of Afghan migrants from Tajikistan.
The organization said it has sent monitoring equipment and forms to Sher Khan port in Kunduz province to assess the current situation.
The organization added that it was conducting interviews with returnees to ask about the reasons for their return and other related matters.
