US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order lifting sanctions on Syria, a move expected to unlock investment and aid reconstruction efforts, Al Jazeera reported.
According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, the executive order—signed on Monday—grants sanctions relief to “entities critical to Syria’s development, the operation of its government, and the rebuilding of the country’s social fabric.”
Syria has faced extensive US financial sanctions, many of which were imposed long before the outbreak of the civil war in 2011.
In a post on X, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani welcomed the decision, calling it “a gateway to long-awaited reconstruction and development.”
He added, “It will remove barriers to economic recovery and reopen Syria to the international community.”
Trump had pledged to ease sanctions on Syria during his visit to the Middle East in May.
“The United States is committed to supporting a Syria that is stable, unified, and at peace with itself and its neighbors,” Trump said in his Monday statement.
