At least 98 people have been killed and more than 150 others injured after a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the capital of the Dominican Republic.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday during a concert by popular merengue singer Rubby Pérez at the Jet Set nightclub, according to the BBC. Pérez was reportedly among those trapped under the rubble.
Among the victims were a provincial governor and former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel. Dotel, 51, died en route to the hospital after being pulled from the debris.
Hundreds of people were inside the venue at the time of the collapse, and around 400 rescuers continue to search for survivors.
Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Centre (COE), expressed hope that many of those buried under the collapsed roof were still alive.
Notable figures, including politicians, athletes, and other prominent individuals, were present at the event. Also among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province, as confirmed by President Luis Abinader.
