The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating earthquake has risen to 1,700 as foreign rescue teams and aid rush into the country, according to media reports.
The 7.7-magnitude quake, one of the strongest to hit Myanmar in a century, struck the war-torn country on Friday, Reuters reported.
As of Sunday, the military government confirmed 1,700 deaths, 3,400 injuries, and over 300 missing.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s junta chief, warned that the death toll could rise further, state media reported.
Three days after the disaster, he made a rare appeal for international assistance.
India, China, and Thailand, along with Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia, have sent relief materials and rescue teams.
However, residents in Mandalay and Sagaing reported that international aid had yet to reach them, raising concerns about severe shortages of food, electricity, and water.
“The destruction has been extensive, and humanitarian needs are growing by the hour,” the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in a statement.
