Party Mark Carney has won the battle for Canada’s Liberal Party leadership, succeeding Justin Trudeau as prime minister.
Carney, who has served as the governor of Canada’s central bank, will replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister at a time when the country is embroiled in trade and immigration disputes with the US.
According to VOA, Carney, 59, hit out at President Donald Trump and said: “The US wants our resources, water, land and our country. Trump has attacked Canadian families, workers and businesses. We cannot let him succeed.”
Outgoing Prime Minister Trudeau had declared at a recent event that the people of Canada were facing a survival struggle from neighbouring America.
Carney’s appointment comes at a time when a general election is due to be held by October this year, but he can call it earlier.
He pledged to win the trade war against Trump, who has slapped tariffs on Canada. “Americans should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”
Carney won 85.9% of the vote to beat his nearest rival, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, the Pajhwok reported.
