Former US special representative for Afghanistan Zalmai Khalilzad has asked some countries including Afghanistan to release American hostages in the first step if they seek a fresh start with the United States.
In a post on X, Khalilzad wrote: “If leaders of countries want to turn a new page with #USA, a good first step is to release American hostages they are holding and return the remains of those who have died.”
He made these remarks while referring to Afghanistan, Venezuela, Syria, Iran, DRC, and Russia.
Two weeks ago, Afghan national Khan Mohammad was swapped for two Americans held in Afghanistan.
The Americans were identified as Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, whose release came during Joe Biden’s final hours in office.
According to reports, Thomas West, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan, had previously said that George Glezmann, Mahmood Shah Habibi, and Ryan Corbett were three American citizens imprisoned by the Taliban.
However, Zabiullah Mujahid, chief spokesman for the Taliban, had said only two Americans were imprisoned in Afghanistan and the Taliban was ready to release them in exchange for Afghan prisoners.
