Following Justin Trudeau’s resignation, the Liberal Party of Canada will announce its next leader on March 9, says a media report.
The leading candidates for the role are former central banker Mark Carney and ex-Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, whose sudden resignation last month led to Trudeau’s exit, Associated Press reported.
“After a thorough and secure nationwide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will elect a new leader on March 9, preparing to fight and win the 2025 election,” stated Sachit Mehra, President of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Trudeau will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
The political turmoil occurs at a challenging time for Canada, as US President-elect Donald Trump continues to call Canada the 51st state and threatens to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian goods.
Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday amid a significant decline in support both within his party and in the country.
