Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly set to announce his intention to step down, media reports say.
However, Trudeau has yet to make a final decision, a source familiar with his thinking told Reuters on Sunday.
The Globe and Mail had earlier reported Trudeau could announce his resignation as early as Monday after nearly nine years in office.
The source, who requested not to be named, said he was not authorised to speak publicly on the issue.
Should Trudeau step down, it would leave the Liberal Party without a permanent leader at a time when polls show the party is on track for a heavy defeat by the Conservative Party in the upcoming election, which must be held by late October.
Sources told the Globe and Mail that while the exact timing of Trudeau’s announcement was unclear, it could come before an emergency meeting of Liberal legislators scheduled for Wednesday.
An increasing number of Liberal parliamentarians, concerned by a series of disappointing poll results, have publicly called for Trudeau’s resignation.
The Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.
According to his schedule for Monday, Trudeau is expected to participate virtually in a cabinet committee meeting focused on Canada-US relations.
Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
