The Salang highway was temporarily closed against all vehicles on Friday morning following heavy snow and storms, The Ministry of Public Works says.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshanas, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works, wrote on X: “The thickness of the snow varies in different areas. In the northern Salang, the amount of snow is 45 centimeters and in some areas it is 97 centimeters, and in the southern Salang, the amount is 78 centimeters and in some areas it is up to 116 centimeters.”
Haqshanas added that personnel from the Salang Pass Maintenance Department were busy evacuating vehicles in vulnerable areas on both sides of the highway.
He urged travelers to stop at safe places and asked people not to travel to the Salang Pass until unavoidable.
He assured that the Salang Pass maintenance and repair personnel were ready to clear the snow and open the road to traffic as soon as conditions permit.
