Hojat Sediqi, the attorney general of Taybad, a city in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, says 30,820 illegal Afghan refugees were arrested at the shared borders before entering the country and were returned to Afghanistan last year.
Pajhwok quoted Sediqi as saying that these people were sent back to Afghanistan through Dogharun after being arrested.
“These illegal migrants were arrested before entering Iran.”
He claimed, the number of Afghans who wanted to illegally enter Iran had significantly decreased compared to the same period last year.
He called the strategic Dogharun border crossing as an important route for ‘illegal’ Afghan residents to exit the country, a daily phenomenon.
He stressed that Iran’s eastern borders were not safe for any illegal entry and violators would be dealt with legally and decisively.
The Dogharun border, located 18 kilometers from Taybad, is the main route for Afghan travelers to enter Iran.
