Former US pesident Jimmy Carter, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has passed away at the age of 100, a media report said on Monday.
Carter died on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia, DW reported. He served one term in office as the 39th president of the United States (1977-1981) during a turbulent period — both domestically and internationally.
He had also served as the governor of the Georgia state. He pardoned Vietnam draft evaders and became the first US leader to take climate change seriously, according to the BBC.
Carter played a key role in brokering a peace deal between Egypt and Israel, but he struggled to deal with the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
In recognition of his efforts for peace, the environment and human rights, Carter was recognised with a Nobel Peace Prize.
Born on October 1, 1924, he was a brilliant basketball player in high school. He spent seven years in the US Navy.
