Russian says its cargo ship has sunk in the Mediterranean sea following an explosion in its engine room.
Citing a statement from the Russian foreign ministry, Reuters reported two of the ship’s crewmembers were missing while 30 others, including 14 crewmembers, were rescued and transferred to Spain.
The ship called Ursa Major was built in 2009, controlled and operated in construction mission by the Oboronlogistika Company working for the Russian Defence Ministry.
RIA news agency said officials of the Russian embassy in Spain were studying the circumstances of the incident and were in contact with local authorities.
Spanish Maritime Rescue Service officials said they had received a distress signal from the ship on Monday when it was located about 57 miles off the coast of Almeira.
Nothing has been said about the cause after the explosion in the ship’s engine room.
