The White House believes the conflict in the Gaza Strip will come to an end immediately if Hamas free the captives in its custody.
“The war in Gaza would stop tomorrow and the suffering of Gazans would end immediately … if Hamas agreed to release the hostages,” the White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson said.
Ahead of discussions in Cairo on proposals for a ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners, NSC spokesman Sean Savett said in a statement on Sunday: “A deal is on the table now.”
The White House said it had been in touch with the family of Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American captive, after he appeared in a video released by Hamas.
The people of Gaza deserved an end to the fighting and displacement, the official said, regretting far too many civilians had suffered far too much.
But Hamas has refused for months to negotiate a good-faith ceasefire and a hostage deal with Israel, he added.
