The British government says it is letting “eligible” Afghan special forces members resettle in the UK, the BBC reported on Tuesday.
Around 2,000 Afghans, who served with the British specialist units, had been barred from relocating to the UK by the previous administration.
But a subsequent review found some applications had been wrongly rejected, Defence Minister Luke Pollard informed the House of Commons.
A quarter of the rejections had so far overturned, the minister said, suggesting some of the Afghan soldiers, who had been directly paid by the UK government, were eligible for resettlement.
But this fact was “overlooked” during the initial resettlement applications. The errors were caused by a failure to access and share the right digital records.
Many of the cases have been reviewed as a matter of urgency because the Afghan troops remain at risk, according to Pollard, who said each application was considered on its own merits.
