The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reports 292 civilians have fallen victim to landmines and explosive remnants of war in Afghanistan in the first six months of the current year.
In a statement on X, OCHA wrote: “Since 1989, 45,000 Afghans have been casualties of landmines and explosive remnants of war, averaging 110 people per month.”
In 2023, 89 percent of the victims were children. The situation remains dire in 2024, with funding shortages threatening mine clearance and victim aid programmes, jeopardising the lives of 3.4 million people.
Between January and June 2024, 88 percent of casualties from explosive ordnances were children. Shockingly, half of these incidents occurred while children were playing and 15 percent during scrap metal collection.
Pajhwok attempted to obtain comments from the caretaker government regarding OCHA figures but was unsuccessful until the filing of this report.
