Eight people were wounded in a powerful bomb attack on Bannu Cantonment in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday morning.
Helicopters flew over the heavily-guarded area in the wake of the bombing and gunfire, local security sources told reporters.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one official said the explosive device went off between the supply depot and security tower in the city.
Security personnel cordoned off the site soon after the explosion, which shattered windowpanes in nearby houses and shook buildings.
“Gunship helicopters are patrolling the high-security city neighbourhood,” the source said, adding eight people were wounded in the bombing.
Meanwhile, security forces said the assault, which erupted at 4:40 am, was thwarted. A car with an improvised explosive device rigged to it was used in the attack.
A clearance operation is ongoing in the cantonment. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bomb-gun attack.
