At least 18 people lost their lives and two others sustained injuries due to flash floods that inflicted heavy financial losses on people in northern Faryab province.
Mufti Ismatullah Muradi, the governor’s spokesman, said that rain-induced flash foods hit Pashtonkot, Balchiragh, Almar, Khayber and Qiasar districts of the province on Friday afternoon.
He said the disaster killed 18 people, injured two others and swept away more than 1,000 houses, 500 acres of farmland, gardens, 150 shops, a mobile health clinic and hundreds of livestock.
This early morning, a committee comprising officials from relevant government bodies and institutions met to provide emergency assistance to the victims and took some necessary decisions.
On the other hand, the Faryab police headquarters in a statement considered the number of people died and suffered in damages unprecedented.
Damllah Gul Ahmad Mubashir, Maimana Mayor, said most of the damages happened in Khayber.
According to him, four individuals were killed in Khayber district, a fifth was missing and crops on more than 500 acres of land and 10 houses got destroyed.
Naqibullah, a resident of Balchiragh district said they witnessed the heaviest rainfall and floods in the district after 50 years.
He urged the government and aid giving organizations to provide emergency aid to the foods-hit people.
