Pakistan’s flawed policy towards Afghanistan is the root cause of its problems, including its current economic woes, says a noted political expert.
Former senator Afrasiab Khattak urged Islamabad to balance its policy if it wanted to arrest its economic slide and banish extremism.
Speaking at an event hosted by an Islamabad-based think tank on Saturday, he suggested: “To come out of the crisis, Pakistan needs to change its Afghan policy and admit the mistakes it has made in the past.”
Balochistan National Party leader Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini underlined the need for improving trade links between the neighbours and talks on sorting out bilateral irritants.
Naeem Khalid Lodhi, former defence secretary, also questioned Pakistan’s Afghan policy. He claimed the policy imbalance was causing Pakistan political, economic and security issues.
Pakistan could help Afghanistan in building peace and restoring stability, believed ex- federal minister of state for parliamentary affairs Ali Mohammad Khan.
“We understand that improved trade with Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan,” he said, calling for tapping bigpotential of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
