The world’s third-largest and Africa’s largest mosque has been inaugurated in Algeria, says a media report.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday officially opened the Grand Mosque of Algiers on the North African nation’s Mediterranean coastline, Al Jazeera reported.
It said the mosque had the capacity to accommodate 120,000 worshipers at a time. It is the world’s third largest mosque after Islam’s holiest sites in Makkah and Madina.
Locally known as the Djamaa El-Djazair, the mosque features the world’s tallest minaret at 265 metres.
It was built over seven years in the form of a modern structure spread on almost 70 acres, decorated in wood and marble and containing Arab and North African flourishes.
Constructed by a Chinese firm, the sprawling mosque reportedly cost close to $900 million.
