Special representatives of Central Asian countries and the European Union (EU) are all set to hold a meeting on Afghanistan today (Wednesday) in Bishkek.
Last week, EU special Representative Tomas Niklasson told a press conference during his four-day trip to Kabul that the political, economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan would be discussed at the meeting.
He said the participants would also confer on the production and smuggling of drugs in Afghanistan.
Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The efforts of governments against drug trafficking and terrorist activities in Afghanistan would also come up for discussion.”
It said representatives of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) would also participate in the Bishkek meeting.
The ministry added EU Special Envoy Tomas Niklasson arrived in Bishkek on Tuesday to participate in the meeting.
The EU representative will also meet representatives of Kyrgyzstan government agencies and civil society.
It is not yet known whether or not the caretaker government has been invited to the meeting, but the Islamic Emirate has repeatedly said it should be part of such events on Afghanistan.
