The US and Iraq are likely to initiate talks on the future of American forces in the war-torn Gulf country, a media report said on Thursday.
The two countries are close to negotiations on the issue as the Iraqi government continues to call for the US military exit.
CNN quoted unnamed sources as saying the dialogue would focus on the next phase of the US-led coalition against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Since an end to the American combat mission in December 2021, around 2,500 US troops have been operating in Iraq in advise and assist capacity.
According to the report, the Biden administration favours a pullout timeline based on conditions, including the stability of the Iraqi government and security forces.
On the other hand, the Iraqi government prefers a schedule based on a timeline, setting the date for an American withdrawal regardless of the stability or the security situation within the country.
“The US and Iraq are close to agreement on starting the Higher Military Commission dialogue that was announced back in August.”
