More than 100 people have been killed and 141 others wounded in two back-to-back bombings in Iran, IRNA reported on Thursday.
The massive explosions occurred close to the tomb of Gen. Qasem Soleimani in Kerman city late on Wednesday, the state-run news agency said.
The blasts apparently targeted the people attending the fourth martyrdom anniversary of Gen. Soleimani, who had been killed in a US drone strike.
Mourners ran pell-mell and ambulances rushed to evacuate the injured from the cemetery to city hospitals.
The Red Crescent chief in Kerman, Reza Fallah, said around 141 injured people had been transferred to hospitals. Other media outlets, however, put the number of the injured at more than 210.
Local officials said the bombs, placed in bags, went off as mourners streamed to the cemetery to mark the death anniversary of the ex-top general.
Without naming anyone, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed the attack on Iran’s “malicious and criminal enemies”.
In a statement, Khamenei said Iran’s enemies should know that “this tragedy will have a strong response”.
Meanwhile, President Ebrahim Raisi said: “We tell the criminal America and Zionist regime that you will pay a very high price for the crimes you have committed.”
