At least 63 people were killed and 40 others sustained burn injuries after a fire erupted in a five-storey apartment block in Johannesburg city of South Africa on Thursday, media reports said.
BBC reported it was not yet known how the fire erupted.
Sources quoted Emergency Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi as saying that firefighters were able to rescue some residents of the building.
The fire gutted the building, and a search and rescue operation was under way and firefighters were moving through the building, Mulaudzi said.
The team had pulled 63 bodies out so far, he said, adding that more people might be trapped inside.
At least one child was among the dead.
