More than two dozen people have been killed and several feared missing following the collapse of a railway bridge in northeastern India.
The bridge under construction caved in near the Sairang town of Mizoram state, killing at least 26 individuals, the BBC reported, citing local officials.
Abou 40 workers were at the site when the railway bridge partially collapsed, an incident that prompted the railway authority to launch an investigation.
“All possible assistance is being given to those affected,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office said after the incident over the Kurung River in Aizawl.
The government will pay about 200,000 rupees ($2,400) to the next of kin of those killed, said a statement from Modi’s office. All victims hailed from West Bengal.
