The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan (UNOCHA) on Sunday said Afghanistan was among top ten countries experiencing extreme weather and natural disasters.
“Did you know that #Afghanistan is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to #ClimateCrisis? “Climate change is out of control,” warned @antonioguterres as the Northern Hemisphere battles record #heatwaves,” tweeted OCHA.
It said severe droughts were intensifying and were destroying people’s livelihood and increasing hunger.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously said Afghanistan had no negative contribution to climate change but was struggling with its effects.
Afghanistan suffered more than two billion dollars in damage due to climatic changes in 1401 solar year, the ministry had said.
MoFA spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said a society should be prepared to prevent possible negative effects of climate change.
In this regard he called the international community’s development assistance as vital, saying such support was required until Afghanistan achieved economic stability.
