Wildfires have burned down at least 95 acres of forest cover in eastern Kunar and Nuristan provinces, the Ministry of Natural DisastersManagement Authority said on Monday.
Shafiullah Rahimi, MoNDMA spokesman, said: “Based on initial reports of the disaster management departments of Kunar and Nuristan provinces, forests caught fire in Pech Dara and Kamdesh districts of Kunar province, destroying trees on 95 acres of land.”
Rahimi added MoNDMA had dispatched several units and volunteer teams to the forests in coordination with provincial committees for combating natural disasters in the said provinces.
He said the fire in Pech Dara district of Kunar had been brought under control and efforts were underway to extinguish the fire in Nuristan.
Ehsanullah Ehsan, director of damage assessment atthe Kunar Natural Disaster Management Department, said that they were unable to control the wildfire due to lack of resources.
He said that the fire was spreading and so far about 14 hectares of forest and pastures had been completely gutted.
