A computer science faculty student in the university of eastern Nangarhar province has made glasses and cane that can help blind people walk and do other things in life.
Bashir Ahmad Omarkhail, a resident of Omarkhail area of Narkh district of central Maidan Wardak province, says if supported he will make other technological inventions.
Omarkhail said he graduated from Dr. Abdul Wakil High School in Narkh District and his wish was to study computer science.
About four years ago, he achieved his goal and was enrolled in Nangarhar University’s Faculty of Computer Science and now he is in fourth year.
About his invention, he said he possessed the idea since long and shared his plan with the administration and teachers of the faculty. He was encouraged and assured cooperation by his teachers. He said he was thankful to his teachers, especially the dean of the faculty, Riaz Hussain, for their support.
After being provided with all possible facilities by the university’s administration, he succeeded in making the glasses and canes in one and a half months.
He said when he brought the glasses and canes to the department and made a demonstration, everyone liked them and appreciated him a lot. He spent about 3,000 afghanis on making the glasses and cane, but said he could reduce the cost.
“A blind person can use these glasses to change his path if there is a wall or other obstacles in front of him or water on the ground or other threats.”
One of his classmates said he did not expect Bashir Ahmad would make such an invention, but he was surprised when he saw it.
Zubair Stanikzai, a friend and classmate of Omarkhail, said Omarkhail’s amazing work encouraged him to use his studies to make something similar.
Information and Culture director Qari Noor Mohammad Hanif said he would introduce the young man to institutions that work in the field of technology so his skills could be used in the future.
